Jim writes:

I am 13 and I live with my mom. (My dad left when I was a baby and he is not in my life). I don’t have any brother either, that’s why I am writing. I can’t talk about it with my mom. My question is whether I am masturbating too much? Can it have bad effects for my health? Please don’t use my real name!

Sex Sultan writes:

Don’t worry little Jimmy: The Sultan knows how to keep your anonymity. There are many myths about masturbation so while we are at it, let me debunk a few for you:

Masturbation Myth Number 1: Masturbation is for perverts.
Myth Debunked: Nonsense! Masturbation is a normal, healthy part of any male and female’sexual awakening. In fact, people who masturbate more, tend to have better sex with partners, because masturbation serves like practice or a training ground. In other words, playing with yourself will help you play well with others.

Masturbation Myth Number 2: Masturbation gives hairy palms.
Myth Debunked: This is just one of the many outright lies invented by uptight people to deceive the naïve little Jimmys of this world. While we’re at it, I may as well tell you it also won’t cause blindness, baldness, etc.

Masturbation Myth Number 3: Masturbation is against God.
Myth Debunked: Although there will always be people who make religious or moral arguments against masturbation, the fact is, it's a healthy, normal means of sexual release, especially for a boy your age, whom I would not recommend engage in sex with a partner because it is doubtful that you are responsible enough to take all the necessary precautions to avoid pregnancy, and STDs, or even simply deal with the emotional repercussions of such an action. In my personal opinion, what is truly immoral is to stifle your sexual urges and instead let them burst out in inappropriate, uncontrolled settings. (Catholic priests anyone?)

As for your core question, which is whether there is such a thing as “too much” masturbation, it all depends on the person. Use your common sense. In my opinion, all good things in life are best enjoyed in moderation. As long as masturbation is not overtaking your life, (i.e. you are not canceling plans to go to the movies with your friends because you’d rather stay home and masturbate… for the tenth time), you should not worry about it. Until then, keep enjoying the five fingered shuffle. I know I will.
